How to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 11

Posted on February 2, 2014

Microsoft periodically launches Internet Explorer, which has added features, improved performance, security and so on but some industry are not ready to accept those changes. IE upgrade not suitable for some business environment. Microsoft released blocker toolkit to prevent IE upgrade via Automatic update. Available in download center an easy solution to disable automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 11 via Windows Update.

For computers running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the Blocker Toolkit prevents the machine from receiving Internet Explorer 11 via Automatic Updates on the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites. The Blocker Toolkit will not prevent users from manually installing Internet Explorer 11 from the Microsoft Download Center, or from external media.

This Blocker Toolkit—like its predecessors for IE10, IE9, IE8, and IE7—is also available on the Microsoft Download Center.

If the IE9 blocker toolkit already installed on the machine to block IE9 from being offered as an important update. Use the IE10 Blocker Toolkit in addition to the IE9 Blocker Toolkit to prevent both IE9 and IE10 from being offered via Automatic Update. This seems  that each blocker toolkit has a unique registry key.

Eg. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\10.0

Here are the instructions if you’re running Windows 7:

To install the toolkit

  1. Download the Internet Explorer 11 Blocker Toolkit from Microsoft Download Center.
  2. Accept the license agreement and store the included 4 files on your local computer.
  3. Start an elevated Command Prompt by going to Start>All Programs>Accessories> right-clicking on Command Prompt, and then choosing Run as Administrator.
  4. In the Command Prompt, change to the location where you put the 4 files.
  5. In the Command Prompt, type ie11_blocker.cmd /B and press Enter. Wait for the message, Blocking deployment of Internet Explorer 11 on the local machine. The operation completed successfully.
  6. Close the Command Prompt.
